Half Moon Bay in West End from above.

For most first-time visitors to Roatán, the biggest location decision is not whether to stay on the west side of the island, but where: West End or West Bay. They are close enough to travel back and forth between easily via a $5 water taxi, but they deliver two very different experiences. West Bay is a beach-and-resort area with calm water and reef access, while West End is more of a small village filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and activity.

The names don’t help with many people’s confusion. West Bay is actually on the West end of the island. Not to mention that the revered West End Wall dive site is in….West Bay. But don’t worry, we’ll walk you through the differences and help you decide what’s right for you.

tHE TLDR:

Choose West Bay if you want the best beach in a resort-like setting. Choose West End if you want more personality, a local vibe, and nightlife.

West Bay

GENERAL VIBE: WEST BAY

West Bay is the more polished, beach-first choice. It is better for travelers who picture white sand, clear water, easy snorkeling, and a more classic Caribbean resort stay. The beach is incredible, with soft sand, (usually) calm protected water, and easily accessible snorkeling right from shore. One knock on West Bay is that it’s also popular with the cruise ship crowds so the beach can be crowded when they’re in port. My experience is that these concerns are mostly overblown. While it is true that the crowds (and the vendors who want to sell them things) will be out in force when multiple ships are in port…they tend to show up around 10:30am and leave by 2:30pm. And what’s “crowded” in Roatan terms doesn’t come close to what you’d experience in many Caribbean destinations. I’ve always been perfectly happy to do an early snorkel while it’s still peaceful, then have a drink and people-watch until the beach empties out in the afternoon.

West Bay feels more like a straightforward beach vacation destination. It’s what you picture when you think of taking a Caribbean vacation. It has a stunning beach protected from the prevailing trade winds, calm clear water, and resort-ish atmosphere, which makes it especially appealing for families, couples, and travelers who want a low-effort beach trip. It also has some of the easiest access to walk-in snorkeling on the island. A day in West Bay can be as easy as it gets: beach, snorkel, lunch, swim, sunset happy hour, dinner.

GENERAL VIBE: West End

West End is the more social, casual, and village-like choice. Notably, it ALSO has a pretty nice beach (particularly in Half Moon Bay near Sundowner’s and Beach House), but much of it is bordered by a road, which gives it a different vibe than West Bay. It is also significantly smaller than the beach in West Bay. There is one road for the most part, and both sides are lined with shops, restaurants and beach bars. Speaking of beach bars, West End is bookended by two of the best…Tita’s Pink Seahorse on one end and Sundowner’s on the the other.

The feel is more like a small coastal village than a resort strip. It is more social, a bit busier, and better for wandering around on foot. There is more of a community vibe with a mix of locals, expats and divers. Just about everything is on the one road that hugs the coast, and you’ll almost always run into people you’ve met diving or at the bar. Just about everyone is at Sundowner’s for happy hour and then people filter out from there for their evening plans.

For first-time visitors, that usually translates to more spontaneity. West End is the better fit if you like the idea of walking out your door and deciding on the fly where to eat or where to grab a drink.

Beach comparison: West Bay is the clear winner

If the beach is your top priority, West Bay wins 10 times out of 10.

West Bay is the home of the island’s premiere beach, a mile-long stretch of fine white sand, shallow calm water, and reef access close offshore. When you picture that turquoise water and white sand…this is that.

West End does have a pretty attractive beach, particularly in Half Moon Bay, but it is not usually the place people choose for Roatán’s most postcard-perfect beach day. West End is more about atmosphere, social life and convenience, while West Bay is more about spending long hours in and around the beach.

BEST SUNSETS: IT’S A DRAW!

The view from Sundowners in West End

You genuinely can’t go wrong if you’re looking to see amazing sunsets. If you’re in West End, West Bay or anywhere in between you’re in good shape. Sundowner’s in West End is a favorite of many, though for short periods of the year the view of the very end of sunset in Half Moon Bay can be blocked by the peninsula. Tita’s Pink Seahorse has an absolutely incredible view, year round. And pretty much anywhere on the beach in West Bay. A sunset drink at Ibagari’s bar (in between West End and West Bay) is never a bad idea.

Lodging options: WEST BAY

West Bay is usually the better choice for travelers who want beachfront hotels, resort amenities, pools and a self-contained vacation. Click here to read our guide to some of our favorite West Bay lodging options.

West Bay is especially good for:

  • couples
  • families
  • honeymoon-style trips
  • travelers who prioritize being on the island’s best beach
  • visitors who prefer a quieter, more serene evening vibe

LODGING OPTIONS: WEST END

West End generally offers more range, from simpler budget-friendly rooms to boutique hotels and vacation rentals. One thing you should note is that very few hotels in West End have proper pools, so if that’s important to you, you’ll have to look a little harder.

West End is often better for:

  • solo travelers
  • divers
  • younger travelers
  • visitors who care more about walkability and atmosphere than a perfect stretch of sand
  • travelers who want more dining and nightlife within a short walk

Restaurants: West End usually has more variety

Both areas have good food options, but they serve different kinds of clientele. There are also some splurge-worthy restaurants on the beach in between West Bay and West End which you can reach from either pretty easily.

Eating in West Bay is more about convenience and scenery. Many of the options are attached to hotels, but they still range from causal to upscale. Since you can walk from one end of the beach to the other in 15-20 minutes its fun to peruse the different options as you stroll.

West End has significantly more variety from budget-friendly baleada joints to higher end splurges. For a first-time visitor staying several nights, West End often feels more interesting for dinners because it is easier to change the mood from night to night: casual seafood one evening, fine dining the next, street food the day after that.

Nightlife: West End is the obvious choice

This is the easiest category to call: West End has the better nightlife.

West End is ground central for bars and clubs, and nightlife in general.

West Bay has bars and beach restaurants…you won’t have a hard time finding a rum punch…but the overall tone is more subdued. You’ll still have plenty of beach bars to enjoy up and down the beach, but by 8-9pm or so most are winding down.

So if your ideal evening includes bar hopping or a more social late-night atmosphere, West End is the better base. If you want sunset drinks, dinner, and a quieter night, West Bay is likely the better fit.

SO, LET’S RECAP:

Choose West Bay if you want:

  • the best beach
  • calmer water and easy snorkeling
  • a more polished resort feel
  • a quieter, more relaxing stay
  • an easier choice for families or couples

Choose West End if you want:

  • more nightlife
  • more restaurant variety
  • a walkable village atmosphere
  • a social, casual feel
  • easier access to bars, dive shops, and day-to-day exploring

Best choice for first-time visitors

Decide what you want out of your vacation and choose accordingly. If you want a quieter, more resort-like experience West Bay is the call. If you enjoy a more social atmosphere and find the hustle and bustle of a beachside village enticing, West End is perfect.

If you are still torn, remember that you can travel between the two for $5 a person on a very enjoyable 10 minute water taxi. They’re both geographically protected from the trade winds which gives them that gorgeous glassy, turquoise water much of the time. So just pick one and then check the other out. That way you’ll get the best of both worlds and you’ll have a better idea of each for when you book your next trip!
